And that reduces us to becoming just role players. We become householder, writer, consumer, social media user. We can even add some adjectives to these roles to define them better like a responsible householder, a prolific writer, a smart consumer, a selective social-media user. Our sense of self is primarily fueled by these roles and the narratives associated with them. This very sense of self then becomes the overpowering lens through which we see the world.

Science and religion both seem to have failed in giving us the much required psychological tools to explore and expand our reality beyond the immediate. The psychological crisis we are faced with has a lot to do with our obsessive identification with our vulnerabilities.

Modern science and popular religion seem to be two sides of the same coin. Both do not actually help in strengthening the mind’s inner dimensions. Instead they mostly serve as obstacles, and not as enablers, in our psychological growth. Both crowd the mind with confusing narratives. Both only tighten the grip of fear.

Science reduces psychology to the study of human behaviour. It wants to study the external to know the internal. And then uses that information to uniformly explain all human experiences. This is, in a way, a dark and sombre form of colonization. Only this time the colony is not any piece of land. This time the colony is inside the human mind.

Religion has been reduced to mere belief-systems that either instill fear in us or make us effervescently clingy to an imagined identity.

Both (modern science and popular religion) dwell on the surface and consequently keep the human mind turned to the externalities of life. But the human mind is capable of much more. It can take human consciousness to higher levels, to the vastness of the Universe. Real freedom of the mind begins when it begins the adventure from the known to the unknown. But for that the mind has to first learn to be fearless.

***

What makes us fearful?

The fear of losing the small “I”.

The most concrete, material form of such a loss is what we call “death”. All our fears essentially link back to death, end, loss.

We are tremendously afraid to lose our attachment to our earthly life. Fear exists due to our psychological weakness. Our mind is weak because it is limited to the known world as captured by our sense organs. When our mind is strengthened and elevated, we can enter a different zone of Time, we can recognize Gods in us.

True psychology is largely about transforming the sense of limited self and consequently the reality perceived by that self.

But how to transform? How do we know ourselves differently?

Are there many parts to the self that we know as “I”? We probably know some. But what are the other parts? How to know these parts?

These questions might seem too distant in a fast-paced artificially intelligent world. But the relevance of these psychological queries have hardly reduced. On the contrary, these questions can lead to discovery of a more concrete feeling of delight and a definite sense of purpose amidst life’s uncertainties we are faced with today.

***

Our remote ancestors millions of years ago were tremendously adventurous when it came to psychological development. This is not recorded in history because this is prehistory. In the material world man was in the basics and was spending his days gathering food, hunting, herding, planting and building. But his psychological world was rich with many awareness.

Ancient civilizations seem to have one common tool for psychological explorations. And that tool is USE OF SYMBOLS. Be it as hieroglyphs or pyramids, vedic hymns or mythological saga, all are symbols giving us directions to develop a more wholesome mind, a more holistic way of understanding reality.

A symbol is an attempt to capture the Infinite into the Finite. Since the Infinite cannot ever be captured entirely in the Finite, there is always a play of concealment and revelation.

The play makes us curious. Symbols can become great teachers as they ALLOW. They allow us the freedom to discover rather than giving us a direct dogmatic idea.

Symbols can help us open our minds and prepare us to expand our sense of identity. They transform us by making us overcome our limited perception of reality.

The psychological archetypes found in the ancient mythologies are for finding out deeper and subtle levels present within us. They are for our true soul recognition.

Knowledge in the ancient world was a healing process and the beauty of the ancient temples was that nobody was preaching there. The teaching and the healing took place in silence.

Words are symbols too. But they have crowded our world. To the extent that an artificially intelligent entity can write, analyse and organize words on behalf of us!

Words like “time” and “god” roam amidst us with their ultra-modern implications. But if we go back in history, we discover that people in ancient civilizations had experienced these words deeply. Their idea of “time” and “god” are connected to silent psychological journeys. But today these very words can endlessly agitate the already restless, fearful mind.

In the ancient world, these ideas were pictorially or poetically presented, so that they can retain their symbolic quality.

CONCEPT OF TIME AS A CIRCLE

This concept of time as a circle can be seen as a powerful, liberating psychological tool. Once our mind shifts from the compelling linear aspect of time, we are immediately transferred to a realm of greater freedom and peace. Somewhere the linear dimension of time is connected to our idea of birth and death, to our preoccupation with the physical world, to our inability to open ourselves to our spiritual existence.

In Roman mythology, we find mention of four ages:

The earliest was the Golden Age, an age of innocence and happiness, when strife and injustice were unknown… No agriculture was necessary, since the earth produced of itself an abundance of everything needed…

The Silver Age followed, less happy than the earlier; now men were obliged to labour for their livelihood and built homes to protect themselves from heat and cold.

In the Age of Bronze men became more savage and began to destroy each other.

The fourth and last was the Age of Iron, a period of crime and violence; slaughter and warfare spread over the world.

The concept of time as a circle is an ancient one that has been incorporated into the mythology and religion of numerous cultures. We also find them in the Mayas and Aztecs. They’re like a cosmic roadmap providing a framework for interpreting both past and future events, suggesting that we are part of a larger creation and that we are not drifting aimlessly through time but are part of a larger, cosmic pattern.

Also in Indian mythology, these ages appear as:

Satya Yuga – The Golden Age of Truth and Purity

Treta Yuga – The Age of Righteousness with a Gradual Decline

Dwapara Yuga – The Age of Doubt and Conflicts

Kali Yuga – The Age of Darkness and Corruption

It is said that our current time is Kali Yuga and it is in the Kali Yuga that the roots of Satya Yuga will be planted.

Satya Yuga (Golden Age of Truth) can be born not out of analytical minds but from something beyond that.

Today as we see AI taking over almost all of analytics and our well-patterned mental world, the need for a higher consciousness has suddenly come to the forefront. Scientists and philosophers have started recognizing there could be consciousness beyond mind. But to unlock the secret passage of going from mind to “supermind”, the new age has to meet the ancient. We must open our doors and windows so that light from the radiant Golden Age can fall on the inner chambers of our consciousness. The seers of that distant past had discovered a treasure house of psychological techniques for the progress of humans.

“The prethinkers, the protopoets, had brought them down to earth in the shining dawns of art: the images of the archetypes, the architects of our soul, the symbols of bliss. But they will come again with their original intent showing man his hidden powers in luminous paradigms.”

“The remote and dateless past
which seemed to be dead
is returning upon us
with an effulgence
of many luminous secrets
long lost
to the consciousness of mankind
but now breaking out again
from behind the veil.”
– Sri Aurobindo

CONCEPT OF GOD

The Gods found in ancient civilizations were not for worshipping. The way we understand them today. The gods essentially demonstrated a psychological movement possible for human beings. They represented our soul powers. Powers we could discover within us.

The different gods revealed different psychological teaching images that could be meditated on. All these teaching images were for giving the mind the necessary training for discovering the true potential of human beings.

Spirituality was there even before human beings stepped on the earth. It was present in monkeys and cats, in dogs and crocodiles, trees, butterflies and stars. And in all ancient civilizations their images emerge as symbols of deeper and higher journeys of spiritual consciousness.

Gods or Angels are generally imagined outside of ourselves. But they are to be found within so that we get to know our true possibilities, capacities, and potentialities. The discovery of these identities within, can help us develop an inner world so rich and wholesome that we will not have any need of external validation. There will be no identity crisis. Human beings will be in peace with themselves.

Thus these gods represent what remains latent in us. They remind us to become aware of our greater self. We are merely one thread of a gigantic carpet which is getting eternally woven. But this one thread is to find the right place in this great work of art.

But how do we recognize ourselves as the thread in the grand work of the Universe? We are to strengthen our psychological limbs by knowing and recognizing the archetypes that our ancient forefathers kept for us in codified forms as symbols, images and icons.

Time has come to connect ourselves again to those symbols, designs and projections which our ancestors treasured and which form our true psychological inheritance, our riches, our kingdom.

Their liberating movements are intact in us, ready to show us the way into a new age of intimacy with the purpose and meaning of ourselves and the whole.

PART 1 We keep identifying ourselves with our immediate reality.
